Imagine conjunctions as the social butterflies of the language world. They connect sentences and coordinating words like party planners on a mission. Now, let’s break it down like a dance move. There are three types: the coordinators, the subordinators, and the correlatives.
Coordinating Conjunctions
These are the ones we learned about in School House Rock. They connect words or phrases that have equal importance. There are seven coordinating conjunctions, and you can remember them with the acronym FANBOYS: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so.
- Example: Marci went to track practice, and Grace went to dance practice.
- Example: I wanted to go to the party, but I had to stay home and study.

Subordinating Conjunctions
At first glance, these appear to be prepositions, but they turn into conjunctions when you add a verb phrase and a comma. They introduce subordinate clauses. To remember the most popular subordinating conjunctions, think ON A WHITE BUS as the graphic below shows:
Formula: preposition + verb phrase + comma
- Example: After we won the election, we had a party!
- Example: Although the pizza delivery guy was late, we still tipped him.
.
Correlative Conjunctions
These are pairs of words or phrases that work as connectors.
Popular pairs include:
- but… and
- either… or
- as… as
- not only… but also
- neither… nor
- Example: I will either study for my grammar test or for my chemistry test.
- Example: There is as much sauce as there is spaghetti.
