What is Enthalpy?

Enthalpy tells us the heat content of a system at constant pressure. You can watch this Crash Course video for a deeper understanding.

Enthalpy Changes

Changes in Enthalpy
  • ∆Hrxn = Hfinal – Hinitial
    • enthalpy change = productions – reactants
  • Endothermic: +∆H
    • Example: NH4NO3 + 27 kJ –> NH4+ +NO3
  • Exothermic: -∆H
    • Example: 4Fe + 3O2 –> 2Fe2O3 + 1625 kJ
  • Combustion: burning; -∆H
  • Fusion: melting; positive; +∆H
    • Liquid to solid: opposite of fusion; -∆H
  • Vaporization: liquid to gas; +∆H
    • Condensation: gas to liquid; -∆H
  • Formation: make one mole of compound from elements; 0.0 kJ
